Lindsey (she's the young lady in the background pictured to the left in case you forgot what she looks like) is in town the weekend of her dad's - that would be Uncle/Tito Wilson for those of you who, like me, refer to all the elders as either Tita or Uncle and subsequently forget who is who specifically - birthday and proposes a cousin night out to either Friday's or Candlelight so she can walk herself home - her words, not mine. The only restriction is that it can't be on the night of her dad's birthday which falls on Saturday. So perhaps some time after Joni's birthday dinner? It is an early dinner after all and it might be nice to round out the night over at Candlelight afterwards. Sound good to everyone? Let me know so we can set this thing in stone.
We'll be meeting up at T.G.I. Friday's by Mama's house this Friday just before 6 or so to take advantage of Happy Hour. We'll just meet up in the bar area. And in case you need any more reason to get together for a drink or two,
It is well documented that tossing a few drinks back in a week (and that means a few: up to one a day for women, up to two for men) has potential heart benefits. But researchers in Denmark decided to look further. Could drinking alcohol have a benefit similar to that of exercise?
"If you don't want to exercise too much," asks Dr. Morten Gronbaek, epidemiologist with Denmark's National Institute of Public Health, "can you trade it for one to two drinks per day and be fine?" A study Gronbaek and colleagues just published in the European Heart Journal suggests the answer just may be yes.
There are a number of reasons a drink can be such a tonic. First, alcohol and exercise affect your heart health in similar ways. "They help increase good cholesterol, or HDL [high-density lipoproteins], and clean the circulatory system's pipes."
This study is part of a growing body of work that makes a medical virtue out of what was once seen as a vice. There is evidence that alcohol in combination with caffeine can limit the damage to your brain after a stroke, even though it may not lower your risk of having a stroke in the first place. Other possible benefits include lowering your risk of diabetes, improving insulin sensitivity in postmenopausal women and decreasing dementia rates in older adults who had been consuming one to six drinks per week.
So we're definitely doing this thing this coming Friday night. The only thing I want to know is if people still want to give that British pub in Northridge a try or would want to do it somewhere else. We could always do it closer to Mama's house either at TGIF, Island's, or Los Toros. Also, Annette mentioned that a new place opened up by EJ's that we could try. So if EJ would like to share any information about that it would be much appreciated.
UPDATE: So it's pretty clear we'll be doing this at a later time. I'm going to suggest now that we do it next Friday at 6pm. Sorry Lindsey, I know you won't be here for that. Hopefully you'll all be able to schedule it in. And yes Austin, this is going into the Google Calendar.
Hey everyone, sorry about the breakdown in communication and the resulting poor planning regarding tonight. The original plan was to meet at the fish and chip place near CSUN probably at around 6pm or so. But due to poor communication on my part apparently nobody was able to plan this into their schedule. I know that Austin has already made other plans and that Annette and Melanie have yet to find babysitters. So we can do one of two things:
1) Those of us able and willing to get together for a drink or two can still do so at about 6pm tonight OR 2) We can push it back to another date when we can get more of us together through better planning and communication.
Let me know soon and I'll update this post accordingly in a few hours.
Seeing no objections, the next cousin meetup over drinks will be at BJ's in Woodland Hills on October 19th. Now the question is what time exactly. They close at 1, I don't know when happy hour is, but I'm guessing it doesn't matter because most of you won't be able to make it at that time. I suppose as early as possible is always best so those who want to do something afterwards can, though I'm more than willing to make BJ's my entire Friday night so late is an option for me.
Any thoughts and suggestions as we make this official?
BJ's it is - the one in Woodland Hills I suppose. What's a good day for everyone? I figure an early Friday night as usual. Keep in mind that we have Uncle Wilson's birthday the weekend after this and Joni's birthday is the weekend after that.
I think we all know in our heart of hearts that Oktoberfest is the inspiration for Green Day's hit song. Apparently the real Oktoberfest starts in late September and ends on October 10, but the commercialization celebration of Oktoberfest runs for pretty much the entire month of October.
It was pretty much decided by Austin and I that our next family bar night should take the opportunity presented by Oktoberfest so instead of meeting up at Los Toros we thought it best that we do it a place that celebrates Oktoberfest. Here are a few ideas. If you have a preference, comment away. And do tell when would be a good time for you.
*Seriously, we need a better name for our cousin meetups.
We really need to come up with a better name than "Family Bar Night," any suggestions? Well for those of you who were not able to make it out last Friday night here are the highlights:
Sara started off the night desperately in need of one of these after finding herself much in the same situation that inspired that product. But with a bit of peer pressure she gave it the old college try with use of her palm... and spilled a good portion of her Corona on the bar, which was probably for the best. However, all was not lost, we were given the tip that one should insert their thumb, if thumb is not large enough to cover the opening, into the bottleneck to help prevent overflow.
I learned that one of the tricks to getting is to style my hair before I go to sleep.
Austin and EJ were mistaken for brothers and for some reason they sat right next to each other and ordered the same exact thing off the menu, earning a Bobbsey Twins remark from our waiter.
